In the 19th century, Alfred Grévin, Arthur Meyer and Gabriel Thomas dreamt of opening the Café Grévin, but it was not until the 21st century that their dream came true.
Next door to the famous Grévin Museum, the Café Grévin opens onto the Grands Boulevards, which Honoré de Balzac described as being "for Paris what the Grand Canal is for Venice".
Sitting at your table in the Café Grévin, as though Paris had come to a standstill in 1882, cast your eyes on the masks of the Grévin décor, by the scenographer Jean-François Lohou, one of the designers of the Grévin scenery, and enter a world of illusion. Comfortably seated on the red velvet upholstery, order lunch or dinner from a waiter who looks very much as though he has just served a glass of Vichy water to Arthur Meyer, the founder of the famous newspaper "Le Gaulois" and of the Grévin Museum. Look over your shoulder — are those the reflections in the mirrors over the bar of the thousand and one celebrities who, over a century and more, have figured in the Grévin Museum? Let your imagination wander at will amidst the half-silvered glass, the sorceress mirrors and the shadowy images.
The menu itself matches the magic atmosphere and the famous Parisian culinary tradition. "Alfred's One-Plate Meals" bear the name of the man who presided over the creation of the Museum. The "Plat du Jour" is named for a celebrity whose wax effigy you can admire in the Museum. The "Snacks" will be just the thing to keep up your spirits before you set off to meet the stars of the "Tout-Paris" in the Museum or after your tour. And for those with a sweet tooth, the Sweets and Treats will come as a welcome break after your visit and before you stroll through the typical covered arcades and their old style shops in the passage Jouffroy or the passage des Panoramas.
At night, under the lights of the Grands Boulevards, a stop at the Café will be a pleasurable start to an evening out at the Théâtre des Variétés, the Théâtre des Nouveautés or at the Grand Rex.
